February is the time for Pet Dental Month. The event was created by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) to raise awareness about the necessity of regular teeth cleanings for cats and dogs as well as the conditions that can affect pets with poor oral hygiene.

Why Do My Pet’s Teeth Need Cleaning?

You can ask the same about yourself: why do you need to clean your teeth? If you don’t, you’ll get plaque buildup, breath odor, and cavities. Your pets can have the same maladies. Even worse, pets with poor oral hygiene could develop more painful conditions such as abscesses and even periodontal disease. This disease can sometimes be fatal, so don’t delay!

Can I Clean My Pet’s Teeth Myself?

Yes! In between vet appointments, you can use a soft-bristled, small toothbrush (like a child’s toothbrush) to keep your pet’s teeth sparkling white. There are also edible treats for oral health, but nothing is better than brushing. It is important to note that while cleaning your pets teeth yourself, do not use regular toothpaste on your pet.
