How to Protect Your Pets from the Cold

How To Protect Your Pets From Cold Weather

As residents of the Clifton area know all too well, the winter months can bring frigid temperatures to the area. We at Valley Animal Hospital want to make sure your pets do not get injured during the cold months. Here are our veterinarian tips to keep your pets safe in the cold.

Shorten your pets walk time

If you have a pet that needs to be walked, you will want to take them out for shorter but more frequent walks. Pets with longer, thicker hair or fur will be able to spend more time outside than pets with short hair. Shorter pets tend to get colder faster as they are closer to the ground.

Take care of the paws

During the winter months, it is critical to check your pets' paws to make sure the pads are not cracked or bleeding. If it snows, you will want to be sure to wipe your pets' paws after a walk to remove any salt. Also, you should cut the fur between the paws during the winter months to avoid snow accumulation between the toes. If your pets' feet are extremely sensitive to the cold, you may want to invest in some booties for your pet.

Bundle the pet up

If you have a dog that is shivering every time it goes outside, you should invest in a jacket to keep it warm. Be sure to invest in a waterproof one, which will keep the pet dry in the rain and snow.

Keep your pet hydrated

It is essential to keep your pet hydrated all year round, but it is especially important during the cold winter months. Keep your pet hydrated improves circulation, which helps keep the pet warm.

Watch for spilled antifreeze

You will want to take special care to ensure any spilled antifreeze is promptly cleaned up. Antifreeze is tasty to pets, so they will lick it up and can become very ill quickly. If you suspect your pet may have ingested antifreeze, bring it in for veterinary care immediately.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "Great care of my cat! All the staff were wonderful to deal with and you can tell they really care and love what they do! Thanks for taking care of us!"

  • "Dr. Henderson is a caring Vet. We love him.
We do not, however, love the prices Vets charge. It is more for a pet visit than a human being. I don't know how people with more than one animal afford pet care."
